SWF-ly Animated Angles

Theme
Extend the concepts of sine and cosine for angles from 0 to 180

Project
Create a web-based flash animation illustrating the solution to the following math problem:
Using available technology, calculate and record the values, to four decimal places, of the following trigonometric ratios.
sin 70º
sin 110º
sin 47º
sin 133º
sin 69º
sin 111º
cos 70º
cos 110º
cos 47º
cos 133º
cos 69º
cos 111º

Summarize the patterns found in the trigonometric ratios of supplementary angles. Identify if there is a pattern between the tangent ratios of supplementary angles.

Use the patterns identified above to solve the following equations for 0 < o < 180.
a) sin o = 0.3267
b) sin o = 0.8593
c) cos o = 0.6481
d) cos o = -0.3719
e) tan o = 2.1847
f) tan o = -0.5915

A Cultural Study of A Canadian Writer

Theme

  • consider various ideas, evidence, and viewpoints to expand understanding of texts, others, and self
  • discuss ways in which texts convey and challenge individual and community values, and behaviours

Project
Study the influence that early cultural experience has on well-known Canadian writers, such as Michael Ondaatje, Timothy Findley, Margaret Laurence, and Margaret Atwood. As part of your research, electronically contact, where possible, Canadian writers of varied cultural backgrounds to discuss how their background affects their work.

Use primary sources to conduct online discussions, where possible, or read autobiographies. Use secondary sources, such as biographies or interviews, to gain more information.

Write a script for an audio podcast using the information gathered. If online discussions were possible, include the text of the discussions as an appendix.

Persuasive short documentary film on human rights

Thematic

  • respond personally and critically to individuals, events and ideas presented in a variety of Canadian and international texts
  • respond personally and critically to ideas and values presented in a variety of Canadian and international texts

Project
Using a human rights issue drawn from a Social Studies 10 unit of study, prepare a persuasive short documentary film to sway public opinion to your view. In preparation for your project, identify information you already have, and search out additional information on the topic that will support your view as well as counter arguments against your view. Include electronic sources in your search.

Base your selection of information on the following:

  • its degree of authority
  • its relevance, currency and accuracy
  • its consideration of opposing points of view.

ComTech Project Underway

Soon, I’ll know officially the actual funding our school received for it’s role in a Multimedia Initiative Project. The $297,722 award to our division was announced in late April. The proposal included “in kind” promises from the school division for staffing, PD, technical support pushing the overall project funding over $400,000. Yesterday’s video conference with the division project leader suggested our school has about $87,000 to spend on hardware and software.

The project focus is on audio, video, animation, photography, digital production and printing skills.

So I’ve been web shopping.

Hardware:
iMacs(at least 6, but likely several more), NAS storage, printers, SLR digital cameras, HDV cameras, microphones, midi keyboards, mixing boards, speakers.

Software:
iMovie, Garageband, Final Cut, Aperture, etc etc
Adobe CS3 (PhotoShop, Premier, Flash, etc.)

The first stumbling block to building my purchase proposal is costing the site/division licenses for software. I need to hear back from the division technology director about that. After software is costed, the rest will be spent on hardware.

Cool.
